5.4.2024

The Korpo Sea Jazz, which has been held since 1989, will take place this year on the last weekend of July, from the 25th to the 27th of July 2024. This intimate and experimental festival is known for its setting throughout the archipelago from the Barefoot Path of North Korpo to Aspö Chapel. Once again, attendees in Korpo will have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful archipelago landscapes accompanied by modern Finnish jazz.

Bassist Joonas Tuuri was appointed as the artistic director for the 2024 festival in August 2023. Tuuri is known from several ensembles and as as a persistent jammer. He will be performing in various line-ups during the festival as well as hosting jam sessions.

“Jazz has really succeeded in creating such a unique art experience that it is challenging to find another similar one. I myself have never seen or experienced a similar event. It is precisely because of such experiences that everyone who has been to the festival wants to come again.” describes the artistic director.

The festival kicks off as usual on Thursday morning from Korpo Market Square, where the Korpo Sea Jazz Houseband, made up of locals and part-time residents, will delight the audience with swinging rhythms led by Joonas Tuuri. The same group will also perform in the afternoon at Nauvo Guest Harbor.

At Korpo Gård Manor, the miksu, mikko & severi trio, which is known for their young talented musicians and lively, experimental improvisations, will play the opening concert of the festival. Jam sessions will begin shortly after the trio’s concert at restaurant Hjalmar’s.

On Friday, Riikka Keränen Group will perform in the medieval church of Korpo with their atmospheric and modern approach. At Korpo Gård, the Maja Mannila trio, together with multi-instrumentalist Mikko Antila, will delve into deep grooves and rhythms. Meanwhile, at the Houtskär’s Archipelago Museum, Matias Långbacka will explore the possibilities of improvisation with his trumpet, looper, and a variety of other effects.

As the evening darkens, something truly unique will be heard on the Barefoot Path in the middle of the forest. Alongside the birdsong, drums and cymbals will echo as drum duo Severi Sorjonen and Anssi Tirkkonen take the stage.

Portside Jazz will kick off the final day of the festival on the terrace of Korpoström Archipelago Center. Saturday morning is the perfect time to enjoy cold drinks and hot jazz under the sun’s rays. In the afternoon, Joonas Tuuri and guitarist Olli Soikkeli will perform Brazilian guitar music at the small chapel on Aspö island. The main concert at Korpoström Archipelago Center will feature the Joonas Tuuri Quartet and the Olli Soikkeli Quartet. After the main concert, there will be a jazz buffet followed by the festival’s final jam sessions, hosted by trumpeter Mikko ‘Gunu’ Karjalainen.

The Jazzbus will transport the audience from Turku to Korpo and back on festival Friday, July 26, 2024. The ticket includes transportation and three concerts. You can sign up for the Jazzbus by sending an email to mellbergbosse@gmail.com by July 10, 2024.
